hello world
Let’s be honest: a product designer writing about container security sounds almost as bad as an engineer designing an interface. But here we are, doing it anyway.
I’ve been designing developer tools since 2020, though I usually describe it more dramatically: “I’ve been suffering containers for a few years now.” What does that mean? It means asking questions with the enthusiasm of a 3-year-old. It means pretending you actually understand the topics you’re discussing during your discovery sessions. It means learning, unlearning, and sometimes crying while going through a DevOps beginners course that requires you to edit a JSON file in Vim. Most of all, being a product designer in the security world means spending hours lost in technical documentation but never panicking when people use fancy abbreviations like VEX, KSPM, or CSPM. (We just nod and search on Google.)
Over these years, I’ve had fellow UX folks working on security or developer tools reach out. Do we talk about design patterns or best practices? Of course not. We’ve all moved to a parallel universe where we discuss DevOps best practices and CIS benchmarks. It’s less networking and more trauma-bonding, right away. You designed a fancy Fintech app? Good for you! But if you have designed a dev tool, we are BEST FRIENDS for life. There is no stronger bond.
So, here’s my modest goal for this blog: to create a safe space for us product designers to share ideas, trade knowledge, and - most importantly - laugh at the weird situations we find ourselves in.
If you’re a product manager or an engineer, you’re welcome here too. After all, you’re the ones who brought containers into our lives in the first place. And let’s be honest - worrying about pixel-perfect grids and buttons stopped being our biggest challenge a long time ago. Now, we’re reading confusing documentation, pretending to understand CI/CD pipelines, and sometimes even trying to keep up with the latest trends. Let’s collect these findings here, shall we?
Now gather around the fire, I have some fun stories to tell. And some questionable knowledge to share.
:wq!
